Dr James Bisby is a lecturer in Clinical Mental Health Science at the UCL Division of Psychiatry. He completed his PhD with Prof. Valerie Curran and Prof. Chris Brewin at the UCL Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit, examining the effects of alcohol on memory for trauma and its role in contributing to symptoms in post-traumatic stress disorder. He then went on to work as a post-doctoral research fellow with Prof Neil Burgess in the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience Space and Memory research group.During this time, he examined the neural mechanisms underpinning memory disturbances in people experiencing negative events, and how changes contribute to post-traumatic stress disorder. He also worked as an honorary research fellow at the National Hospital for Neurosurgery and Neurology, examining memory function and neural oscillations in intracranial epilepsy patients – helping set up the first human single neuron recordings at UCL. In 2019, he moved tothe Division of Psychiatry as a core member of the MSc team for Clinical MentalHealth Sciences.

His research programme investigates the neural mechanisms of memory for negative events and the links between trauma, memory and mental disorders. He was recently awarded the British Medical Association foundation Margaret Temple award for schizophrenia research - examining the links between memory and psychosis in people who have experienced developmental trauma.
As a core member of the MSc in Clinical Mental Health Sciences, he co-leads modules on the Neuroscience in Mental Health module and Current Research in Psychological Trauma and PTSD.
