Research Themes
Research Summary

My main interests focus on emotional and behavioural disorders in children and environmental factors (parenting, teacher-child interaction, stressful or traumatic experiences including domestic violence). My research focuses on how these environmental factors relate to child temperament; and how findings in this area can be translated into more effective family and school-based intervention and prevention strategies. I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, specializing in evidenced-based family treatment of emotional and behavioural disorders in children.

 My research areas:

  • Child mental health - anxiety, autism, conduct problems, antisocial behaviour, psychopathy, callous-unemotional (CU) traits
  • Intervention - CBT, parent training
  • Observation - parent-child interaction, teacher-child interaction
Teaching Summary

I am Programme Leader for the MSc Developmental and Educational Psychology, and lead the modules Atypical Development and Developmental Psychology. My main goal when teaching is to help students understand how to apply theory and research findings to both clinical and educational practice. I am also the UCL IOE Doctoral School representative for the Psychology pathway of the ESRC-funded UBEL doctoral training partnership.

Other professional activities include reviewing papers, conference abstracts and grants; editing (I am currently putting together a practitioner textbook on family intervention for child and adolescent mental health to be published by Cambridge University Press). I am on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, a Board Member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Psychopathic Traits (SSSP); and act as an External Examiner for the University of Edinburgh's MSc in Children and Young People's Mental Health and Psychological Practice. I have examined MSc and PhD theses for UCL IOE, Goldsmiths, University of Edinburgh, Macquarie University, the University of Queensland and the University of Melbourne.
