Biography
Dr. Jyoti Belur qualified in Economics at the University of Mumbai where she worked as a lecturer before joining the Indian Police Service and serving as a senior police officer in the North of India.
She has a Masters in Police Management from Osmania University and, after leaving the police, went on to complete a Masters in Human Rights at the University of Essex. Dr. Belur’s PhD thesis on the Police Use of Deadly Force in Mumbai was completed at the London School of Economics.
Now an Associate Professor in Policing at the UCL Department of Security and Crime Science she has undertaken research for the UK Home Office, College of Policing, ESRC and the Metropolitan Police Service. Aside from her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Belur has numerous published works, including over 45 peer reviewed articles and book chapters and several reports. She was awarded the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship to conduct research on the topic: ‘Countering Naxal Terrorism: Police Perspectives’ in India. She is also the programme convenor for the MSc in Policing.
Research Summary
Dr Belur's research interests include policing, police training and education, systematic reviews and evaluations, and violence against women and children.

- Project: Evaluating Organisation Justice Interventions in two police force areas (UK and USA). Funded by Vera Institute of Justice.
- Project: Evaluating Multi Agency Stalking Intervention Programme in three police force areas. Funded by Suzy Lamplugh Trust (Police Transformation Fund, UK)
- Project: Developing and Evaluating Evidence Based Police Graduate Training Programme. Funded by Police Innovation Fund, Home Office, UK
- Project: India Mid - Career Training Programme, Funded by Ministry of Home Affairs, India
- Project: Countering Naxalite Terrorism: Police Perspectives. Funded by Leverhulme Trust (Early Career Fellowship)
