Biography

Dr Jishizhan Chen is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who has completed clinical training and obtained a Master of Surgery and Bachelor of Clinical Medicine from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. He is a Research Fellow at UCL. His research interests include bone 3D models, cell-material interface, and bioinformatics. His PhD project involved constructing an in vitro biomimetic bone liquid crystalline (LC) model, which revealed the key biological activities and signalling pathways involved in the process of directional mineralisation. His novel findings have been awarded the UCL Robert Brown Travel Award for his presentations at international conferences. He has also developed a collagen-based photo-crosslinkable bioink for 3D printing and contributed to the micro-to-nano material characterisation and biocompatibility testing in an AI-enhanced artificial cochlea project and a soft robotics project. His collagen-based bioink and artificial cochlea projects produced two new IPs and are being commercialised (supported by UCL Global Engagement Funds and UCL Fellowship Incubator Awards). He has supervised six honour-awarded MSc/iBSc bone engineering projects. He actively took part in presenting his research outcomes on international conferences. He has produced seven high-impact publications, with four more soon to be published. His multidisciplinary background and experience in various topics allow him to work on a wide range of basic and translational research. He is a member of SICOT and British Society of Audiology.
