Biography

Jane Portlock, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy Education joined the UCL School of Pharmacy in July 2011 to further develop the undergraduate curriculum of the MPharm, increase the focus on practice-based learning and enhance the teaching of professional and clinical skills to the students. She brought  experience of a number of courses, which she created and ran at the University of Portsmouth in the twenty five years she was associated with the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences. She became Head of the Department of Practice and Policy in January 2013 and took the lead role in the General Pharmaceutical Council’s (GPhC’s) reaccreditation of the MPharm undergraduate degree course.
 
Having completed a PhD in Health status assessment at the University of Cardiff in 1986, Jane moved to Portsmouth to take up a position as teacher/practitioner within Portsmouth Hospitals Trust, a role which she held for two years before being appointed by Portsmouth Polytechnic. She developed the MSc in Clinical Pharmacy in 1989 and a number of hospital pharmacy based units for the BSc in Pharmacy. A seven year role as Regional Education and Training Pharmacist for Wessex Region then followed between 1992 and 1997, with a responsibility for the regional preregistration programme and specialist pharmacy education. A return to the University of Portsmouth in 1999 brought her back into the role course creation and delivery with the MSc in Community Pharmacy, FdSc in Medicines Management, Pharmacist Independent Prescribing Programme, and Specialist MSc units for Critical Care. More recently she has been part of the Joint Programmes Board and developed the MSc in Pharmacy Practice for hospital and community pharmacists at the University of Portsmouth. Her research areas include patient safety, patients’ experience of medicines advice, development of medicines management services, health and wellbeing support by pharmacy and educational development.
 
Professor Portlock has been a Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) Local Tutor for Portsmouth and South East Hampshire since 1991, a role which she continues. She has a strong commitment to the pharmacy profession as a GPhC registered pharmacist and member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, having been a local and regional chair for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain for a number of years, and more recently the Local Pharmacy Forum lead for the Wessex branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS).
 
Other professional activities include membership of the GPhC independent prescribing accreditation panel and the Education Expert Advisory Panel for the RPS.
 
Areas of Expertise
Educational programme creation for pharmacy practice at professional doctorate, postgraduate, undergraduate and foundation degree level. Professional development and life-long learning. Innovation in learning and teaching. Research into educational aspects of pharmacy practice, healthy living pharmacy implementation and development of new ways of teaching.
