Biography
Jane trained as a doctor at UCH Medical School, qualifying in 1980. She undertook her postgraduate clinical training in General Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at St Bartholomews Hospital in London. She completed her research training at St Bartholomews Medical College, developing digital imaging methods for the evaluation of radiological joint space size in patients with osteoarthritis.
In the late 1980s, Jane became interested in Medical Education. She was the clinical lead for the development of the first Clinical Skills Centre in the UK (opened at St Bartholomews Medical College). She was a co-author of the GALS screen, a novel method of joint examination, which is used in all UK medical schools.
She has recognised expertise in the scholarship of assessment, and has been instrumental in the development, implementation and evaluation of several undergraduate and postgraduate assessment systems in medicine. This includes: the finals examinations at Barts and UCL, the Royal College of Anaesthetists postgraduate examination, the PLAB test, the MRCP (UK)examination and the tests of competence in the GMC Performance Procedures.
Jane has a broad interest in all aspects of the performance of doctors. Recently this has included an evaluation of the effects of gender and ethnicity on the career trajectories, and performance of women and BME doctors.
She was Women in the City Woman of Achievement in medicine and healthcare in 2012, and was in the inaugural HSJ list if inspirational women in healthcare in 2013.
In 2014 she was elected u President of the Royal College of Physicians. The third female president in its 500 year history.

Since 2006, Jane has run the development of the tests of competence for the General Medical Council's Fitness to Practise Procedures. The research component of this includes the development of new methodology for the assessment of poorly performing doctors. This team are also investigating the characteristics of doctors who get into difficulty with the GMC.
She was the chair of a research steering group at the Royal College of Physicians on Women in Medicine which published its findings in 2009 Women and Medicine: The Future.
Furthermore, Jane leads work on the investigation of ethnicity and gender in relation to academic performance in medical students and doctors and has led pilots for Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) looking at the introduction of computer based aptitude testing in the selection of doctors to training posts.
Jane was the Medical Director of the MRCP(UK) examination (2010-2013), responsible for the assessment of more than 24,000 physicians world wide. In 2012, the clinical component of the exam was introduced for the first time in Kolkata, Khartoum and Myanmar. Research related to this assessment is ongoing, and recently has focussed on a study looking to see if there is raclal or sex bias in the examination, together with UCL's Professor Chris McManus.
From 2009- 2012, she was an appointed member of the UK's General Medical Council.
She successfully bid to the GMC to continue to run the test of competence development for their Fitness to Practice procedures in 2014
Teaching Summary
As Director of UCL Medical School, Jane is the chair of several teaching related committees and is actively involved in the leadership, management and design of the MBBS programme. She chaired the postgraduate taught course review and the MBBS review steering groups in 2007 and participates in weekly clinical teaching and out patient teaching for MBBS undergraduates at the Whittington Hospital. Jane also designed and supervises the assessments of the MBBS students in phases 2 and 3 of the curriculum. She has recently completed a term of office as Academic Vice President of the Royal College of Physicians (the vice president responsible for education). She is currently the Medical Director of the MRCP(UK) examination. This is a high stakes international examination with over 22000 candidates annually. The examination is recognised as an example of assessment good practise.
Jane wass a Council Member until Dec 2012 for the GMC. She is on the postgraduate board, the equality and diversity reference group, the resources comitteeand chairs the education and training comittee.
