He is an Emeritus Statutory Professor of the University of Oxford, where he was a Fellow of Nuffield College.   An Academician of the UK Academy of Social Sciences, he was elected to the British Academy in 2002 and chaired the Academy’s Sociology, Demography and Social Statistics Section from 2006-2009.  Through his career he has raised research grants and contracts from a wide variety of UK, US, European and UN agencies.  He has been the Director of three different ESRC Research Centres (Centre for Micro-Social Change, and UK Centre for Longitudinal Studies at Essex University as well as CTUR at Oxford), and has been a Departmental Head at Bath, Essex and Oxford Universities.  He has supervised or jointly supervised more than 20 PhD students to completion.  He won the Silver Medal of the UK Market Research Society in 1987, gave the first Millennium Lecture at 10 Downing Street in 1999 and was appointed as a Commander of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year Honours 2017.

Research Summary

His 1977 doctorate from the University of Sussex was in History and Social Studies of Science, and he spent the first ten years of his academic life as a Fellow of the Science Policy Research Unit at Sussex.  In 1984, aged 34, he was appointed to a professorship at University of Bath, becoming Head of the School of Social Sciences, before moving to Oxford in 1990,   He was the Director of the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex, and the Principal Investigator of the British Household Panel Study from 1993 to 2006, and continues as Principal Investigator of the Multinational Time Use Study.
