I was appointed to a lectureship at the School of Slavonic Studies, University of London, in 1976, after studying at the University of Oxford.
Since 2001 I have been Professor of Russian Literature and Film at the School of Slavonic Studies, University College London




I have written over 200 articles and reviews on Russian literature, culture and film. In 2000 I published a book on Nikolai Gogol''s story 'The Overcoat'
My recent research has been in the field of Russian cinema. I am the author of two books on Russian film and several articles in journals and collected volumes. My current research project, nearing completion, is a book entitled Through a Russian Prism: Representing Foreigners in a Century of Russian Film.
I teach three courses in Russian film to BA students of the School of Slavonic Studies, University College London.
I also offer an MA course in Russian film, entitled Being Soviet, in the same UCL Department.
I teach a course called Russian Cinema: Epochs and Genres, on the UCL MA in film studies.
I teach on courses in Russian literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, at both BA and MA level.
