I have worked in science education for nearly twenty years. I started as a secondary school science teacher working in London and later held leadership positions in a school and multi-academy trust. I joined UCL's IOE in 2019 as a senior teaching fellow before leaving to become an HMI and subject lead for science at Ofsted. I returned to IOE in 2022 as Head of Initial Teacher Education.
I published my first book in 2020; Powerful Ideas of Science and How to Teach Them. I am also founder of the science teacher - an online platform that provides science teachers globally with free resources and ideas to teach the big ideas of science. Each year the website is used by over 200,000 users from more than 100 countries.
I am interested in understanding how and why students learn science and what this means for teacher education, with a particular focus on initial teacher education. My specific interests include:
- ITE curriculum design to develop subject/phase expertise
- exploring comparative judgement as an alternative way for teachers to assess in science
- developing curriculum and teaching materials to teach the big ideas of and about science
- understanding how cognitive and affective outcomes interact when pupils learn science
