Biography

I am undertaking a three-year postdoctoral research project (2021-24) funded through a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, entitled “‘Progressive Islamophilia’ and the British Queer-Muslim intersection”. The project examines the relationship between the "progressive left", Islam and the LGBTQ+ movement(s) in the UK. I am especially interested in how the left interacts with Islam and queerness and how this impacts on queer Muslims.

I completed my ESCR-funded PhD in the anthropology department of SOAS, University of London, based around a year's fieldwork in a Mumbai housing colony where I researched questions of belonging and difference and social identity formation. Prior to this I worked in environmental consultancy for seven years following an undergraduate degree in Natural Science. Outside academia I compose and perform on the piano.
