Dr James Hutton
  • Lecturer (Teaching)
  • Dept of Philosophy
  • Faculty of Arts & Humanities

I grew up in West Yorkshire. I did a BA in Philosophy and German at Oxford; then an MA in Philosophy at CEU, Budapest; then an MPhil and PhD in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge. I also spent two years studying at the Humboldt-Universit├Ąt, Berlin (one during my BA and one for a Leverhulme-funded project during my PhD).

Research Summary

My research focuses on two areas:

(i) Normativity in Kant's philosophy of mind. How is mental representation possible? I think Kant has interesting arguments for the claim that normativity is a key ingredient.

(ii) Emotions and moral epistemology. Can emotions provide us with ethical knowledge? I'm working on a set of articles defending a qualified "yes", by spelling out how emotion-based beliefs can be reliable.

Teaching Summary

In 2020-2021, I'll be teaching Philosophy of Language, Metaethics, MA Research Preparation 1 and Senior Seminar. I'll also be serving as MA Tutor.
