Biography

Julian Walker is the Co-Leader of the MSc Programme in Social Development Practice, the Director of the DPU's Training and Advisory Services, and the Co-Director of the DPU's Gender Policy and Planning Programme

I am a social development practitioner, with a background in social anthropology. My work engages with social policy, and mainstream development policy, to understand, and address, the relationship between diverse social identities and experiences of development in the global South, with a particular focus on gender, disability, and age, and their intersections. I have developed methodological approaches for working with social identity in development research and interventions. I have applied these to research, education, and practice relating to the livelihoods and citizenship practices of the urban poor, and to addressing equity in the social impacts of development interventions, including, in particular, policy and practice around displacement/ involuntary resettlement.

Research Summary

I have two broad areas of research focus. One explores the impact of infrastructure development on urban displacement, in an effort to challenge developmental rationales for displacement, and forefront more socially just responses (with projects in Brazil, China, Philippines, Nigeria and UK). The other has been to understand situated experiences of development interventions across a wide range of countries, from the starting point of particular social identities (chiefly disability, and gender). All of my research has engaged with contexts of informality in the global South and had an intersectional focus on gender relations as a cross cutting concern.

Teaching Summary

I have been co-Programme Leader (with Dr Andrea Rigon) for the MSc Social DevelopmentPractice (SDP) since 2008. I lead one 30 credit core module for the MSc SDP (DEVP0033 Social Policy and Citizenship) and co-lead another module on Gender in Policy and Planning (DEVP0050) with Professor Caren Levy and Dr. Jordana Ramalho. I also make teaching inputs to the MA Gender, Society and Representation (UCL CMII, SELCS) as well as supervising PhD students.
