Biography

I am Professor of Communication and Head of the Department of Culture, Communication and Media at the UCL Institute of Education. I studied Intercultural Communication (MA, 1999) and Educational Linguistics (PdD, 2003) at Tilburg University, Netherlands, before joining the Institute of Education in 2004. I worked at Imperial College London between 2009 and 2011.

Research Summary

My research is focused on clinical communication and education and health care delivery. I am currently exploring the use of bodyworn cameras among paramedics. Recently completed projects include ethnographic studies on teamwork and inter-professional communication, surgical education, and clinical decision making in the operating theatre and intensive care unit. The overall aim of these projects is to develop an account of the semiotics of healthcare and tools to support frontline staff. Central to my approach are theoretical advances in social semiotics, applied linguistics, and ethnography, and the in-depth analysis of video recordings of professional activity.

Teaching Summary

I supervise PhD students in the areas outlined above and welcome new applications. Examples of recently completed and ongoing work include studies on work-based assessments in surgery (by Arpan Tahim), the partnership between physiotherapists and parents of children with cerebral palsy (by Phill Harniess), leadership development among medical education leads (by Aine Burns), and facilitation and implementation of educational interventions in GP practices (by Barbara Strong).

I have also led Master’s modules on multimodal communication and research at UCL Institute of Education, and I have taught on a range of doctoral training programmes, including the Ethnography, Language and Communication Summer School.
