Biography

Dr Jean Ledger is a social scientist with extensive research experience working in applied health and policy research. She specialises in qualitative and organizational research methods and health policy, studying the implementation of interventions in real world settings. This includes service innovations, digital health, national change and quality improvement programmes and government policies. 

Prior to joining UCL, Jean spent seven years at King's College London, conducting her PhD in primary care and health care management, before moving into various research and teaching roles. 


Research Summary

Active and recent projects:

  • Pre-hospital specialist triage of potential stroke patients using digital technology: a rapid service evaluation to capture learning and impact of innovations prompted by the COVID19 pandemic (NIHR Rapid Service Evaluation Team - RSET)
  • Generating quality evidence for digital health – a collaborative cross sectoral initiative (UCL Knowledge Exchange Grant)
  • Special Measures for Quality and Challenged Providers: Evaluating the Impact of Improvement Interventions in NHS Trusts (NIHR Rapid Service Evaluation Team - RSET)
  • Mixed methods evaluation of the Getting it Right First Time programme in elective orthopaedics (NIHR CLAHRC NT)


Former NIHR-funded research studies:
  • NHS top managers, knowledge exchange and leadership: the early development of Academic Health Science Networks – a mixed-methods study (PI - Ewan Ferlie, King's College London)
  • Increasing the motivation and ability of health care managers to access and use management research (PI - Sue Dopson, Said Business School, University of Oxford) 

Teaching Summary

Jean was previously a Teaching Fellow at King’s College London and lectured on various programmes, including Qualitative Research Methods. She is currently co-lead,  with Professor Naomi Fulop, of ‘Key Issues in Health Services Delivery, Policy and Management', a module on UCL's MSc Population Health. She supervises MSc and PhD student projects.
