I graduated in Medicine from Edinburgh University in 2001 and achieved my CCT in Genitourinary Medicine in 2012. From an academic perspective, I was awarded an MSc in STIs &HIV (distinction) in 2011 from UCL and LSHTM, and my MRC-funded PhD in Primary Care and Public health in 2015 from QMUL. My doctoral research focused on developing, implementing and evaluating an automated online clinical care pathway for remote diagnosis, treatment and partner management of genital Chlamydia trachomatis, as part of an eSexual Health Clinic. Since joining UCL in 2015, a key element of my work has been the development and evaluation of innovative online clinical care pathways from diagnostics to online management of STIs and HIV. This includes legislation and regulation, and the impact of these novel models of care on health inequalities.
As a clinical consultant in sexual health/HIV, I strive to bridge the gap between academia and clinical care, and I focus on translation of research into practice. My clinical and research experience complement and are integral to each other: my clinical work allows me to understand the need at an individual and service level, and what is feasible in terms of implementation; and my research enables me to inform inclusive service delivery and provide high quality care.
I am a clinical academic in sexual health and HIV, with a research focus on digital health, health inequalities, health services delivery research and public health. I lead the investigation, design, development and evaluation of innovative inclusive online clinical care pathways from diagnostics to online management.
Current major research projects:
-ASSIST: Assessing the impact of introducing online sexually transmitted infection (STI) postal self-sampling services into sexual health provision within the UK on health inequalities, access to care and clinical outcomes. (https://www.assist-study.org/)
-Natsal: The British National Surveys of Sexual Attitudes and lifestyles are among the largest and most detailed - scientific studies of sexual behaviour in the world. (http://www.natsal.ac.uk/home.aspx)
-SEQUENCE digital: Improving sexual health for all in a digital NHS (https://www.sequencedigital.org.uk/)
I am co-Director of the MSc in Global Health and Development programme (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate/taught-degrees/global-health-and-development-msc). I lead the Digital Health for Infectious Diseases module, as well as contributing to teaching on other modules.
