My project is exploring the efficacy of hybrid biomaterial for cartilage replacement (implants) in human joints, using micro-CT techniques supervised by Prof. Peter Lee. The organic/inorganic hybrid biomaterials are developed working with the co-supervisor, Prof. Julian Jones at Imperial College. The novel materials are 3D printed into lattice shapes for fixture into cortical bone onone side, and as replacement for articular cartilage on the other side. In vitro tests are performed first to determine biocompatibility. In vivo tests are performed on the most promising materials to determine ingrowth efficacy. Ex vivo testingof sheep implants will be characterised using advanced synchrotron imagingtechniques, quantifying the biomechanical properties of the regrown bone/implant bonding. The ultimate goalis to help develop improved 3D printable implants for human joint replacements with bettercombined hard-tissue and soft-tissue integration.
