Biography
Dr John Malkinson is a registered pharmacist and a
graduate of The School of Pharmacy. He completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy
degree with first class honours in 1996, and registered as a Member of the
Royal Pharmaceutical Society after pre-registration training at the William
Harvey Hospital in Kent. He returned to The School in 1997 and completed his
PhD on the development of a lipoamino
acid- and glycolipid-based delivery system for the anti-tumour somatostatin
analogue TT-232, under the supervision of Prof

Research Interests
Dr Malkinson’s research focuses primarily on solid-phase synthesis and the development of methodology to synthesise complex peptides and modified peptide conjugates, particularly with activity against drug-resistant bacterial infection, or as potential anti-cancer agents. Targets of current interest include cyclic peptides and depsipeptides, glyco- and lipopeptides and natural products (such as the quinoxaline antibiotics, chlorofusin, daptomycin and the iturins). Recent research has also investigated the total synthesis of bioactive small molecules from plant sources, including glycoresins and substituted phloroglucinols, as well as (glyco)peptides related to mycobacterial peptidoglycan. Research has been funded by the BBSRC, EPSRC, AICR, The Heptagon Fund, The University of London, The Bloomsbury Consortium and Union Life Sciences.
Areas of Expertise
Solid-phase synthesis; non-ribosomal peptides; amino acid and peptide chemistry; carbohydrate chemistry; lipopeptide and glycopeptides synthesis; peptide delivery.
Teaching
Dr Malkinson is involved in the teaching of chemistry throughout the MPharm course, but his primary responsibility lies in teaching foundation organic chemistry in Year 1 of the course. He is module leader for the Year 1 Chemistry of Medicines module, year lead for the First Year of the MPharm programme and Deputy MPharm programme director. He completed a Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at the Institute of Education, University of London and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Dr Malkinson has conducted research into the use of supplementary electronic teaching resources (such as live audiovisual recordings of lectures) and their role in supporting student teaching and learning.
