Biography

I have a wide-ranging background in academia. I graduated in Physical Sciences before concentrating on History of Science. I gained a PhD in History of Biology at UCL, before undertaking a postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for History of Science in the relationship between geneticists and breeders in Britain, 1900-1940.

I began work at the Arena Centre (previously CALT) in 2005, specialising in professional development until 2011. I then acted as an advisor for the faculties of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Engineering Sciences and the Built Environment, taking a particular interest in assessment and feedback.

In 2015 I took over the Directorship of UCL ChangeMakers, which has since grown from its pilot year of supporting 10 student-initiated projects into a whole programme of student partnership activities (see www.ucl.ac.uk/changemakers).

Research Summary

My main research interests lie in the area of student partnership. What are the benefits for students and staff who participate in it and what conditions are important to ensure the greatest benefit? What impact do partnership educational enhancement projects have and how can this be maximised?

I am currently co-investigating whether 'Meet the Researcher' can be adapted to enhance students feedback literacy and also what student and staff experiences of assessment and feedback are at UCL.

I am also reflecting on institutional change at UCL and how this has been achieved from 2013 in the domain of education.

Teaching Summary

I teach and assess on UCL Arena Open, Arena Two and Arena One. These are UCL's professional development courses for staff, which aim to equip staff to deliver research-based education in line with UCL's Connected Curriculum.

I co-led Arena Two in 2014-15, delivering a large increase in participant satisfaction.
