Biography

I am a Research Fellow working across the Department of Psychology and Human Development and the Department of Learning and Leadership at the IoE. My work focuses on understanding how we can best help children to thrive, by considering the influence of the home and classroom environments on their learning and development. I currently work on the GCRF UKRI Action Against Stunting project (https://actionagainststunting.org/).

Research Summary

I work on the Action Against Stunting research project. Stunting - the impaired growth and development from poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation, affects 43% of the world’s children under the age of 5, mainly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4 of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all, interventions that combine adequate health and nutrition with educational stimulation are recommended to favour the development of stunted children. I coordinate discussions with partners in India, Indonesia and Senegal to profile children's development and their access to quality preschool education in each country.

Over the past few years, I have also investigated the development of language skills among French and British primary school children. I have led research to understand the impact of classroom noise on children's school performance, and to test whether classroom-based interventions could influence noise levels, and children's annoyance towards noise.

Finally, I feed reflections on how educational neuroscience can inform educational practice. Throughout my research projects, I collaborate with educators to gain insight into how research can inform their work and practice with children. I have been the social media office for the Centre for Educational neuroscience in 2019/2020 and I am currently the EARLI SIG 22 JURE Coordinator.
