Biography
I studied for a PhD at Birkbeck, University of London. My supervisor was Professor Max Coltheart and funding was provided by the Medical Research Council. I was awarded a Royal Society Research Fellowship on completing my PhD in 1983, to study at the University of Padova. There I worked with adults with acquired neurological disorders and children with developmental difficulties.  I then took up lectureships teaching on the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Speech and Language Therapy and Psychology at the Central School of Speech and Drama and the University of Essex. I moved to the IOE in 2007.
Research Summary
My main research interests have been in the areas of literacy development and literacy difficulties.   I have used models of skilled reading in order to provide a context for thinking about the set of cognitive processes that are required for competent reading and spelling. I have investigated potential sensory difficulties as underlying causes of literacy problems and have looked at relationships with verbal memory processes.

I have also carried out research into object and action naming in children and adults. This has involved examining the cognitive and linguistic processes that affect the availability of words for spoken production in typically developing children, older and younger adults, children and adults with naming difficulties, and people with Alzheimer's disease.  Together with collaborators I have been able to provide resources for those involved in research into literacy and naming and assessment of these processes (e.g., the online Children's Printed Word Database and the Object and Action Naming Battery). The research has been funded by a range of funding bodies including the Leverhulme Trust, British Academy and ESRC.

Teaching Summary
During the lectureships at Central School of Speech and Drama and the University of Essex I taught on the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Speech and Language Therapy and Psychology, providing modules in research methods and statistics, language development, cognitive neuropsychology and the psychology of performance. I moved to IOE in 2007 and became module leader for Literacy Development and Reading and Spelling Difficulties.  I am currently the module leader for Reading and Spelling Difficulties and programme leader for the MA Education (Psychology).
