Jonathan Fishman is a substantive ENT Consultant at the Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Academy of Medical Sciences Clinical Lecturer at UCL. He graduated with a triple First Class Honours Degree in Natural Sciences from Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge and completed his clinical training at St John's College, University of Oxford. He spent part of his medical training at both Harvard University and NASA Ames Research Centre.


Jonathan was awarded Taylor and Howard-Agg Scholarships at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and has been awarded the highly prestigious title of "Lifelong Honorary Scholar", by the University of Cambridge, for academic excellence. He has been awarded a fellowship from the British Association of Plastic Surgeons for research at NASA and from Cambridge University for work at Harvard. In 2009, Jonathan was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine GlaxoSmithKline Fellowship Award for his academic achievements to date and in 2010, Jonathan was awarded a British Foreign and Commonwealth Office UK/USA Fellowship and a Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Research Fellowship.


In 2011, Jonathan was awarded joint Medical Research Council (MRC) and Sparks Children's Charity Clinical Research Training Fellowships and he also received a UCL-Berkeley Fellowship (Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge). In 2012, Jonathan was awarded "Best Manuscipt of 2011" in the main article category by the Journal of Laryngology & Otology and won the 2012 Royal Society of Medicine Laryngology & Rhinology Section Research Prize. In August 2012, Jonathan was awarded a UCL MRC Centenary Award which was launched by the MRC to mark its 100 years, supporting the very best of its early career researchers to accelerate their research and their career development.

In December 2012, Jonathan was shortlisted and subsequently won the award of "Royal Society of Medicine-Wesleyan Young Trainee of the Year" across all Royal Society of Medicine sections, that includes all the medical and surgical specialties. In 2013, Jonathan was awarded his PhD degree from UCL and in 2014 Jonathan was selected among over 350 candidates worldwide to join the 2014 Young Investigator Council and the Editorial Board for the Tissue Engineering Parts A, B & C Journal. He is currently a Senior Editor for the Journal of Laryngology & Otology (Cambridge University Press). He was awarded the David Howard Laryngology Prize in 2014 and is currently an elected member of the Council of the British Laryngological Association (BLA). He is currently BLA Meetings Secretary and is on the Academic Committee for BACO International 2018 and ELS, 2018. In 2015, Jonathan was awarded a post-doc Academy of Medical Sciences Starter Grant for Clinical Lecturers. Jonathan is committed to a career in Academic ENT, with a strong emphasis on teaching, education and research.

Research Summary

Jonathan Fishman's current research interests lie in understanding and developing new treatments for patients with voice disorders. He completed his PhD in 2013. He has received personal research fellowships from the Academy of Medical Sciences (2015-19), Medical Research Council (MRC, 2012-14), Sparks Children's Charity (2012-14), the Royal College of Surgeons of England (2010-11), the UCL-Berkeley Award Scheme (2011-12) and the UCL-MRC Centenary Award (2012-13). He is currently an honorary Clinical Lecturer at UCL.

Teaching Summary

Jonathan Fishman teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate research and clinical students on a regular basis. He lectures on the UCL Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine MSc course, as well as the MSc Engineering Course (bioengineering / tissue engineering modules). He also lectures medical students, ENT junior doctors and prepares candidates for MRCS. He is author of six undergraduate/postgraduate textbooks and is first author of numerous book chapters, journal reviews and primary research papers.
