Research Themes
Research Summary

Josep Miàs’s professional, academic and research activities have always coexisted in an intertwined way: every project is part of a common global area of research, in which architecture, design, technology, history, urban context are synthesised. Josep Miàs has always regarded his professional activity as a way to develop a personal research, in which the limits of architecture could be blurred in order to make it become a complex device that could make a difference in terms of social, economical, ecological and cultural human habitat.
Josep began his research activity in 1992, when he was granted with a PI RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP (1992-1996) at the Projects Department of UPC Centre 244. He investigated the development of work technology and planification of the project as a consequence of the City Zoning Resolution of 1922 in NYC. This scholarship was subvented by Catalonia Regional Government. This scholarship involved the annual presentation of papers at different international architectural congresses and summits, and periodical lecturing at various universities.
Meanwhile, and still analysing the methodology of design, he developed the Thesis The new instruments of Architecture (to be submitted soon) with Enric Miralles as his Thesis Director. In this case, Josep’s research explored new pedagogical and methodological systems to be implemented in architecture schools, transforming the learning process into a multidisciplinary, multilayered and groupal experience, insisting on the creation of new knowledge from the analysis activity and the performative and catalyst qualities of architecture. He was given the Proficiency in Academic Research Certificate, the approval of the Pre-Thesis and the Researcher Degree in 1996-1997.
From 1997 to 1999 Josep Miàs followed his research lines regarding design and methodology with a DGES Research directed by Enric Miralles and subvented by the Spanish Minister of Culture and Education. Josep was member of the investigation team. Part of the research activity was developed in an academic context, where Enric Miralles and Josep Miàs were teaching architecture courses.
In 2000, Josep Miàs founded his own office. From 2005 till 2007, and having gained experience in professional, academic and research fields, he implemented his research conclusions in the design of the complete architectural studies syllabus for ESARQ Escola Superior d’Arquitectura – UIC Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Barcelona, where he consequently became Deputy Director and Design Department Director.
Apart from regarding the teaching activity itself as a research area, Josep Miàs has developed parallel research lines linked to his professional practice (attached research outputs). Three of the most prominent are: 1) working with the built context as an architectural material, 2) studying the implementation of new construction systems and timings and 3) new structural systems. These three areas of research have been studied continuously both in an academic and practice environment: showing, sharing, teaching and learning with the group what has been tested in reality. These tree areas could be linked to most of the projects by Josep, but there are three projects in particular which are completely based in these investigation lines: 1) Banyoles old town refurbishment, 2) Torre Baró apartments building and 3) iGuzzini Illuminazione Ibérica Headquarters in Barcelona.
