I joined UCL in 2002, previously having worked at the East London and the City Health Authority, and in Honduras with an international non governmental organisation

Research Summary

I specialise in qualitative and participatory methodologies with marginalised groups to develop an understanding of contexts, and understand the barriers to, and facilitators of healthy behaviours in low- and middle-income countries.

My research enables the participation and engagement of a wide variety of stakeholders in the development of health interventions that directly address problems as they are experienced, in the systems that they are experienced. I have applied these research methods to non-communicable diseases, child marriage, maternal, newborn & child health, nutrition, and health systems.

I have an in-depth knowledge of the community context of South Asia, and the community, health systems and policy context of Nepal in particular. I have worked with research partners in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Malawi, Niger, Somalia and Thailand.

Teaching Summary

I co-lead the Global Non Communicable Diseases MSc module, and I coordinated and taught the Qualitative Research in Action MSc module from 2004 to 2011. I have supervised several MSc students, and one PhD student to completion.

My work involves building research capacity among colleagues in partner organisations and I have conducted training in qualitative research methods, participatory evaluation methods, process evaluation and action research.

I currently supervise two Phd students.

I am interested in supervising students seeking to use participatory approaches to understanding and addressing global health issues.
