Biography

I graduated from St Mary's Hospital Medical School (First Class BSc 1993, MB BS with Honours in 1996), and studied Neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, and the Royal Free Hospital. I completed my MD at the Dementia Research Centre using MRI to track progression in Alzheimer's disease in 2004. I was appointed as a HEFCE Clinical Senior Lecturer at UCL and Honorary Consultant at UCLH in 2009; Reader in Clinical Neurology in 2004; and Professor of Neurology in 2007.

I run a weekly multi-discliplinary Cognitive Disorders Clinic as part of the integrated Cognitive Disorders Service at Queen Square, oversee the dementia CSF diagnostic service, and sit on the DRC Executive, Research and Clinical Services Committees.

I have published over 200 papers on a wide range of topics relevant to dementia and ageing. I co-edited the Oxford Textbook of Cognitive Neurology and Dementia - 2017 BMA Neurology Book of the Year - and authored the chapter on Alzheimer's disease and other dementias for the Oxford Textbook of Medicine. I have grant funding of >£20M, including >£5M as PI.

I am chair of the Advisory Council of the Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART); Deputy Chair of the Association of British Neurologists (ABN) Cognitive Disorders Advisory Group; UK representative to the European Academy of Neurology Dementia panel; London representative to the ABN Research committee; and serve on the Dementias Platform UK (DPUK) Steering Group. I am Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology.

I participated in the development and publication of European Guidelines for the co-prescription of cholinesterase inhibitors and Memantine in moderate-severe Alzheimer’s disease. I serve on a number of Pharmaceutical advisory boards including on a Data Safety Monitoring Committee for Axon Neuroscience SE.

Research Summary

I undertake translational clinical research in ageing and the dementias with particular interests in early and accurate diagnosis - incorporating MRI, amyloid and tau PET imaging, and CSF and blood biomarkers - and in identifying the genetic and life course contributions to Alzheimer's disease. I led an international study to investigate the genetics of Posterior Cortical Atrophy, the visual variant of Alzheimer's disease. I lead Insight 46, a major longitudinal study to detect prodromal dementia in 500 members of the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD) 1946 Birth Cohort, and co-lead the mental ageing programme of the wider NSHD cohort.

Teaching Summary

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a UCL Arena Senior Fellow. I lecture on the UCL Dementia and Clinical Neurology MSc, as well as nationally and internationally.

I have supervised 10 students who have completed their PhDs (5 as primary), and currently supervise 8 PhD students (3 primary). I am a named supervisor for the Leonard Wolfson Training Programme in Neurodegeneration and UCL EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training In Medical Imaging.

I serve on the Standard Setting Committee for the Royal College of Physicians Neurology Specialist Certificate Examination. I was training lead for the UCL NIHR Queen Square Dementia Biomedical Research Unit, and as training lead for the BRC Dementia Theme.
