Biography

  • I was a social science teacher and head of department for 10 years before moving into Higher Education to become a course leader for the PGCE in Social Science, first at Goldsmiths College and then at UCL Institute of Education.  I then led the MPhil/PhD Research Training Programme. I have just completed a five year term as Academic Head of Research for the Department of Curriculum Pedagogy and Assessment. I was also  Department Graduate Tutor (responsible for doctoral supervision) and have recently been appointed to the post of Faculty Graduate Tutor, a post I will take up in January 2021

Research Summary
I am primarily interested in how policy effects the professional lives of teachers. I research issues around accountability, performativity and inspection, policy enactment more generally, and have recently completed a project on teacher retention. I use Foucault to help make sense of neo-liberal education systems. I work with qualitative methodologies, particularly interviewing and using case-studies.
Teaching Summary

  • Teaching:
    • I have taught on  the PGC Social Science, and contributed to various Masters' modules. I currently teach on the Doctoral Training Programme - specifically an Introduction to Case Studies.
