Currently, I work in the UCL Knowledge Lab, part of the Department of Culture, Communication and Media where I am Reader in Media in Education. I am a founder member of the DARE Collaborative (Digital Arts Research in Education).  I have presented my research as keynote or contributor at many international conferences and seminars and have published a number of books and journal papers in the field of media in education, technology in education.  Before joining UCL-IOE in 2007, I worked in primary teacher education at Goldsmiths College and at the University of East London.  And prior to that I worked as a primary school teacher in East London and, later, a local authority advisory teacher for ICT. 
I have worked with colleagues in a number of international settings including Australia (in Melbourne with Monash University), Chile (University of Santiago), New Zealand (Waikato), Norway (Oslo and Trondheim), Finland (Tampere) and more.
In the UK I am an executive member and trustee of the Media Education Association. In addition to academic publication in books and papers I have also written research-based books for teachers and teacher-educators.

Research Summary

My research and publications are in the fields of:  
Media education, new literacies, creative activity and learner agency;
Digital video and animation production by young learners;
The use of social software and online networks for publication and learning; The changing nature of teaching and learning in response to the pervasive use in wider culture of media technologies in formal and informal settings;
The new literacy practice of “curation” in digital media;
The “third space” as a location for lifelong learning.
I use a range of qualitative methods in my research includig visual methods, multimodal analysis and discourse analysis.
I am co-editor of the journal, Learning, Media and Technology.

Teaching Summary

My field is Media in Education and I teach on the MA Digital Media, Culture and Education where I am also acting co-programme leader.
I lead one of the core modules: Internet cultures - Theory and Practice, co-lead on Moving Image Production, and contribute to the other core module: Digital Media, Cultural Theory and Education
I supervise 10 students on their masters dissertations and reports.
I am currently supervising 9 doctoral students on Phd and EdD research programmes.
I contribute taught sessions on other programmes: the BA Education, MA Museums and Galleries and PGCE Primary New Media Specialism.
I was previously Academic Head of Learning and Teaching in the Department of Culture, Communication and Media.
I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
