I am Professor of Media in Education at the University College London Institute of Education, based at the UCL Knowledge Lab. My research, teaching and publications are in the fields of new literacies, media education, play on and offscreen, theories of curation and agency in social media, and the changing nature of teaching and learning in the context of digital media. I am interested in the co-production of research with children and young people and use participatory, ethnographic and multimodal research methods. I have collaborated with international academic colleagues in a number of countries, including Australia (in Melbourne with Monash University), Chile (University of Santiago), New Zealand (Waikato), Norway (Oslo and Trondheim), Finland (Tampere and Helsinki) amongst others. Previously, I worked as a primary school teacher in Tower Hamlets, having trained as a teacher at the Institute of Education. I later worked as a local authority education advisor in Newham and a teacher educator. at both Goldsmiths College and the University of East London. I am an executive member of the Media Education Association, a member of the research committee of the UK Literacy Association and a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts.

The use of social software and online networks for publication and learning; The changing nature of teaching and learning in response to the pervasive use in wider culture of media technologies in formal and informal settings;
The new literacy practice of “curation” in digital media;

I use a range of qualitative methods in my research including visual methods, multimodal analysis and discourse analysis.
I am co-editor of the journal, Learning, Media and Technology.
My field is Media in Education and I am programme leader for the on the MA Digital Media: Education. I am module leader for Internet cultures, contributing tutor on the Enquiry core module and a tutor for dissertations and reports.
I am currently supervising a number of doctoral students on Phd and EdD research programmes.
I contribute guest sessions on a number of other programmes, including the BA Education.
I was previously Academic Head of Learning and Teaching in the Department of Culture, Communication and Media and, before that, Postgraduate Research Tutor.
I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
