Biography

Dr. Jonathan Rokem is an Urban and Political Geographer teaching at the UCL Department of Geography and Honorary Senior Research Associate at the Bartlett School of Architecture, Space Syntax Laboratory, UCL.  

 

Dr. Rokem held a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2015-2017) at the Bartlett School of Architecture, Space Syntax Laboratory, UCL, leading the Contested Urbanism Project. Prior to this he was Bartlett Grand Challenges Visiting Research Fellow at the Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU) and Bartlett School of Planning (2014-2015) and a Visiting Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Human Geography, Lund University, Sweden (2013-2014). He was awarded his PhD (2014) in Urban Politics and Planning from Ben Gurion University of the Negev and he completed his MSc (2006) from the Department of Geography at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), London, UK. 

 

Jonathan has over a decade of consultancy experience working with private, public, and, third sector. In 2006-2008 he was European Project and Policy Officer at the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), London, UK and Project Manager of the Advocacy Participation and NGOs in planning (APaNGO) EU funded project.

Research Summary

Dr. Jonathan Rokem (Rock's) research and publications span; urban studies, political geography, comparative urbanism, race and ethnicity, social and spatial analysis, interdisciplinary methods, contemporary social and spatial theory, and, urban inequality and violence in a global perspective with regional interests in Europe and the Middle East. 

 

His book: Rokem, J. & Boano, C. eds. (2018) Urban Geopolitics: Rethinking Planning in Contested Citieswas recently published in Routledge - Studies in Urbanism and the City series. 



Teaching Summary

Jonathan has extensive teaching experience of both undergraduate and postgraduate modules: including development, mentoring and assessment. At the UCL Department of Geography he contributes to the following undergraduate modules; ‘Data Acquisition and Interpretation’; ‘Global Geographies’; ‘Writing and Analysis in Geography’; ‘Political Geography and Geopolitics’; ‘Urban Geography’; and ‘Global Urbanisms'. 


At the Postgraduate level, he convenes the ‘Cities, Space and Power’ module; and co-convened the ‘Cities and Climate Change’ module. Jonathan also supervises MSc Urban Studies student’s dissertations. He has also organised several overseas research study visits and undertakes administrative and pastoral academic duties, and has extensive experience of web-based teaching using Moodle for assessment and supervision.
