Biography
I was awarded a BEd at Queens College, Cambridge in 1972, and a PhD at University of Nottingham in 1998 while teaching for a number of years in a differing contexts. I have been in my current position at IOE:UCL since 2009 in a variety of roles.
Research Summary
My current interests concern the use of a Simple View of Meaningful Reading (Smith 2018) to underpin literacy professional development and national policy; and the effective pedagogy of professional development to support teaching and learning in international contexts.
Teaching Summary
I have a leadership role for the 'Supporting Learners and Learning' Module in the Advanced Educational Practice MA Programme; a Tutor role on the 'What is Education?' and the 'Understanding Research' Modules on the the MA Education Programme; and a leadership role on the online 'Learning in Teaching' Module of the PGCE:Teacher Development Programme at University of London.
Previously I have been a teacher and a senior manager in schools in England and New Zealand, a National Leader for the international early literacy programme 'Reading Recovery', and a member of teams focusing on the professional development of teachers in Jordan, India, Dubai, and Malta.
