I qualified in Medicine in 1981 (Medico, Universidade Federal do Parana, Curitiba, Brazil) and then completed medical and specialist training in Neurology in London at St Thomas Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. I am registered with the General Medical Council (GMC No.3425310) and I am in the Neurology specialist register. I obtained a PhD at the University of London in 1994. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
I am the Head of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. Apart from my UCL duties, I am a honorary Consultant Neurologist with a specialist interest in Epilepsy at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen Square) and at the Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy in Buckinghamshire. I am the Medical Director of Epilepsy Society and the R&D Director of SEIN - Epilepsy Institute of the Netherlands Foundation. In addition, I direct the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Neurosciences in London and the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research,Training and Treatment of Epilepsy in Heemstede, in the Netherlands.
Global Health is one of my interests, and apart of my work in the UK and the Netherlands, I have been involved over the years in setting up epilepsy services or I have carried out epilepsy research in China, Brazil, Ecuador, Georgia, India, Bulgaria, Kenya and Senegal.


My research interest includes epidemiological aspects of the epilepsy particularly outcomes, pharmacology, antiepileptic drug development, epilepsy management in resource poor settings and genetic contributions to the aetiology of epilepsy.
I am involved in teaching activities at UCL and in the Netherlands. These include teaching to UCL medical students, in-house lectures and tutorials to junior medical staff, pre and postgraduate students and other paramedical professionals. I do outpatient teaching at the NHNN, mostly for post-graduate students. I have regularly lectured to the Diploma Course in Neurology and the MSc. in Neurosciences at UCL. I have lectured extensively to learned societies both in the UK and abroad. I frequently lecture at local postgraduate centres throughout the UK and abroad. I was an organizer of the annual SEIN - VU Short Course in Epilepsy in Amsterdam and the Oxford Epilepsy Teaching weekend.
