Biography

I am currently Module Leader for the Teachers as Authors (TAA) for the Secondary Teachers Education Programme (STEP). In this role I oversee the design and delivery of each module, working collaboratively with the programme leader and tutors on the course, as well as taking onboard student feedback to improve module delivery and content. I support students on the programme as a tutor and I am Deputy Chair of the Exam Board for STEP.

I am also a tutor on the Psychology PGCE and Social Science PGCE. In this role I supervise PGCE students on placement as well as plan and deliver subject sessions on the course. I have delivered a Professional Studies lecturer on Inclusive Teaching and Learning for the Secondary PGCE cohort. I am a member of the Secondary PGCE Wellbeing and Inclusion Group and Curriculum Development Group.  Along with colleagues on the Social Science PGCE, I work with a small group of practising teachers looking at how the sociology curriculum is enacted in the classroom by teachers and how a socially just subject specific pedagogy might act as a way to empower learners. In 2019-20 I was part of a Knowledge Exchange Project on new government Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) guidance working with Secondary PGCE student teachers.

I am a Departmental Inclusion Lead for Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) and a member of CPA Senior Leadership Team. I am a member of the LGBTQ+ Equality Steering Group and also a member of the Athena Swan Sliver Award Self Assessment Team. I am a UCU Departmental and Health and Safety Rep. Previously at the IOE, I was an Institute Partnership Manager and Acting Subject Leader for the Psychology PGCE.

Research Summary

I have particular expertise and interests in Inclusive teaching and learning, in particular allyship. As a lecturer in education, I have been working with my student teachers on how they can be effective pro-active LGBTQ+ allies in the classroom, for the pupils they teach.  In 2018 I presented a paper on developing LGBTQ+ allies in teacher education to the UCU LGBTQ+ research conference in Manchester. I am particularly interested in helping develop a more inclusive working environment for marginalised colleagues and students. I am a ‘friends of Out’ and a member of the LGBTQ+ Equality Steering Group.

Teaching Summary

I moved into Higher Education in 2015. Before this I was a Sociology, Psychology and Humanities teacher working in London schools for 14 years. I was Head of department and Head of Faculty (Humanities) as well as an experienced PGCE and NQT mentor.
