Biography

Prior to entering academia, I worked as a widening access practitioner, at the Universities of St Andrews and Hertfordshire. This involved designing and running outreach activities for school children from backgrounds and schools which traditionally send fewer students to university.
To further my interest in widening access, between 2015 and 2018, I completed a PhD entitled "Perceptions, discourses and values: exploring how key stakeholders construct, negotiate and enact widening access to medical school" at the Centre for Healthcare Education Research and Innovation (CHERI) at the University of Aberdeen.
Following graduation, I worked as a Research Fellow at CHERI, before starting my post as Research Fellow at UCL in April 2019.
My undergraduate degree is a First Class Hons in International Relations and German from the University of St Andrews, Scotland, awarded in 2010.

Research Summary

I am particularly interested in research that explores the perspectives and viewpoints of individuals in relation to medical education, especially in relation to widening access to medicine. Understanding the healthcare, educational and social needs of stakeholders is essential to the successful implementation of policy initiatives.
My research to date has been mainly qualitative, using discursive and thematic approaches to analysis.  I am experienced in qualitative data collection, including interviews and focus groups.
My interdisciplinary work aims to drive alternative ways of thinking and to generate innovative recommendations for policy makers and practitioners to help address inequalities in healthcare and education.

Teaching Summary

I have a range of postgraduate teaching experience, including: teaching students on Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) and Diploma (PGDip) courses in Medical Education; and tutoring the module ‘Communication Theory and Analysis’ as part of an MSc in Professional Communication.

I have co-supervised undergraduate and intercalated medical students through their research projects.

I also have extensive experience of teaching school-age pupils during my experiences an Outreach Officer, prior to starting my research career.
