Research Summary

My research focuses on how social and urban processes shape inequalities in health and well-being. I am particularly interested in the role of day-to-day practices, social structure and mobility with a view to contribute to urban policy, transport planning and public health. Having a background in urban geography and planning, I develop a socio-spatial perspective on mobility and health and often process large population and consumer datasets using a range of data science methods.

I have conducted and contributed to research projects on:

  • Transport, social inclusion and health
  • Social practice theory and health
  • Housing and health disparities
  • Intergenerational social and spatial mobility
  • Bio-social processes and population structure
  • Geodemographic analysis of health

A substantial part of my research is concerned with methodology as it relates to

  • Spatial analysis and statistics
  • Data science techniques: ‘big’ population, consumer and travel smart card data
  • Specialised GIScience with focus on regionalisation and surname geographies
  • Case-based methods: classification, cluster analysis, sequence analysis, geodemographics
  • Survey design and analysis
  • Bayesian inference
Teaching Summary

I advise doctoral students on the following topics
  • Transport, health and social exclusion
  • Social and spatial health disparities
  • Health inequalities and planning

I teach on CASA's MSc 'Smart Cities and Urban Analytics' and lead the following modules:
  • Urban Systems Theory (CASA0001)
  • Smart Cities: Context, Policy and Governance (CASA0008)
