My lab is addressing how cell fate specification and morphogenesis are coordinated in time and space to generate 3D embryonic structures focusing on the heart. The heart is an excellent model system to address this question. It is composed of a diversity of cell types including cardiomyocytes. All these cell types must be specified and integrated during morphogenesis to establish a complex structure made of 4 chambers: two ventricles and two atria arranged in parallel, driving blood from the body to the lungs and through the rest of the body. Addressing how the heart forms during morphogenesis has also implications for our understanding of congenital heart diseases affecting ~1% of newborns.
