Biography
I have been teaching on the MA Education modules 'What is Education', 'Understanding Research' and 'Curriculum, Policy and Practice' in addition to dissertation supervision since 2017. I also currently teach and supervise ITE students on the Postgraduate diploma in Secondary education in conjunction with the Institute for Ismaili Studies. I am on the module leadership for What is Education and, previously, I led the MA module 'International Perspectives on Education Reform'. I have also contributed to teaching on the 'Education Traditions and Systems in Europe' module.

I started working on the MA Education at UCL in 2017, in the final stages of my PhD. I have also taught at Leeds Trinity university on language learning in the primary classroom, practitioner enquiry and outdoor learning (2020-21) on the BA Education and Primary PGCE and supervising MA Education students on topics regarding primary teaching, language learning and Science.

After youth and community work in Easterhouse, Glasgow, I trained as a primary teacher and Science specialist, teaching across the primary age range (and lower secondary) in Lewisham, Hounslow, Derbyshire and in state bilingual schools in North Carolina, USA and Berlin, Germany (2000-2017). During this time, I trained as a forest school leader and I also worked as an English methodology trainer for 2 years across the Northern Red Sea Zone in Eritrea, from which I was seconded to rewrite the Grade 2 and 7 English textbooks (2004-2006). In the USA, I was awarded a federal scholarship to study on the Dual-U MA dual language methodology programme (2007-9).

Professional and personal country knowledge

England, Germany, Scotland, Eritrea, USA, Mexico, India

Research Summary

My primary research interest is in bilingual education. My MA in Effective Learning led to research in bilingual cognition, followed by a PhD in bilingual education policy (2012-17). This examined the ways in which different groups were able to use Free schools policy reform in England to set up new state-funded bilingual schools and drew on institutional theory to explain the constraints on this process.

My most recent research project (2020-21) was as part of a CPA team examining the impact of Covid-19 on students transitioning from primary to secondary school.

I have also been involved in a number of other research projects, including impact evaluations with Pearson Education of Global English learning products and new BTEC qualifications. I also helped to design an RCT to evaluate a blended learning primary literacy scheme. In 2020 I also worked with the Institute for Apprenticeships to conduct an evaluation of their assessments.
