Research Summary
Our work focusses on the problem of apical periodontitis and its treatment outcome (including healing and tooth survival). We have adopted a translational model of research designed to improve the outcomes of endodontic treatment procedures by using a systematic approach to synthesise clinical outcomes data to inform clinical practice, clinical trial design and formulation of hypotheses. We aim to use prospective studies to evaluate treatment prognostic factors to derive clinically relevant questions and working hypotheses. These will be systematically tested through laboratory (microbial diseases, biomaterials and tissue engineering and physical [mechanical, electrical, fluid dynamics]) and human models. The work embraces microbiology, microbial-host interactions, tissue healing and imaging, impedance spectroscopy, fluid dynamics in viscously dominated environments and clinical trials.
Teaching Summary
The Unit runs three programmes, the MSc in Endodontics (1 yr FT or 2 yrs PT), the MClinDent in Endodontology (2 yr FT) and the SAC-approved, 3 yr FT Specialist training programme in Endodontics. In addition, the Unit includes a dedicated training programme in Endodontics for the SPRs in Restorative Dentistry. The CPD arm of teh operation also provides a Certificate in Endodontics, with the future prospect of developing progression through a Diploma to a Masters. The programmes are characteristically intensive and require organisation, dedication, focus and hard work from the graduate. There is an established culture of active learning with relatively little didactic instruction. The media of teaching and learning include seminars, tutorials, laboratory simulation exercises, clinical work and case conferences. Clinical progression is geared to be systematic and progressive, with the level of monitoring consistent with degree of progression and ability.
