Research Summary

I am a scholar activist based at the Institute of Education, UCL. My work is centred around Black feminist affect, critical race theory, abolition justice, and science and technology studies. Within these frameworks I believe that the politics of love, anger, community care, and accountability are fundamental to creating a just and liberatory society.

I am currently a research fellow (lead researcher) on the Making Spaces Project, a research project exploring equitable and transformative practice in Makerspaces for young people from marginalized communities. The project seeks to disrupt the material-based approach commonplace in makerspaces, so as to encourage and enable one of effective pedagogy, community support, and mutual empowerment with and for young people. The project actively embraces and champions standpoints that have historically been smothered and ignored, so as to reorient the practices of making, and the technologies made, towards a liberatory end.

My PhD (UCL STS) focuses on institutional racism, and heteropatriarchal White supremacy in UK higher education STEM providers. The project is the result of a collaboration with 17 Black women, from PhD to professor working in HE STEM, who shared their felt experiences of existing, resisting, and surviving, under the weight of Whiteness, and how, together, we might begin to dismantle a colonial academe.

I am co-founder of the Decolonise STEM collective, a global group of activists, academics, practitioners, artists, and community organisers addressing coloniality, privilege and power, in and around STEM.

Finally, I am a trans rights, and mental health advocate. Issues that are deeply personal to me, and ones that I write about openly and honestly.
