Biography

I have previously held postdoctoral research positions at the School of Engineering and Design, Brunel University, the School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences, Loughborough University, and the Loughborough Design School.

TOTeM (Tales of Things and electronic Memory, 2009-2011) explored the social applications and implications of then emerging tagging technologies (QR and RFID) in the context of the Internet of Things, specifically as regards the changing social histories of personally meaningful objects.

On LEEDR (Low Effort Energy Demand Reduction, 2011-2014), I worked alongside Prof. Sarah Pink and an interdisciplinary team of anthropologists, engineers and designers on a large-scale domestic energy research project which aimed to design digital solutions for energy demand reduction (see energyanddigitalliving.com).

Hothouse (2014-2017) built on LEEDR's monitoring data and visual-sensory ethnographies to explore possible hot water futures.

Research Summary

I am a qualitative social researcher with a background in cultural studies audience research and more recent specialism in visual and sensory ethnography as applied to the study of digital technologies and everyday life. As a Senior Research Associate on the IN-TOUCH project (UCL Knowledge Lab), I work alongside Professors Carey Jewitt and Sara Price to explore the social impact of digital touch technologies on human communication.

Teaching Summary

I have taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the areas of audience research, film studies, and design ethnography.
