Research Summary

Professor Kevin Mills Head of Translational Mass Spectrometry Research Group at UCL Institute of Child Health.

My research group's aim is to bring together state-of-the-art mass spectrometry with precision and stratified medicine, to identify new drug targets, disease mechanisms, find new biomarkers and develop new and more more precise tests for the NHS.

The Translational Mass Spectrometry Research Group (TMSRG) is contained in one of the most sophisticated mass spectrometry centres in the country. Our  research group is composed of approximately 20 full time researchers and is unique in that it incorporates proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics and also has the ability to translate any biomarker discovered into a test to NHS / Industry accredited standards. My research group work very closely with the Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre at Queen’s Square, Nephrology at the Royal Free Hospital and the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences. Our aim is to provide the link between research, diagnosis and translation of new tests into the portfolio of tests for the NHS and Industry.

Expertise: Precision Medicine, Stratified Medicine, Rare diseases, Translational test development, biochemistry, mass spec, biomarker discovery, Proteomics, Metabolomics and Lipidomics (GCMS, LCMS, UPLC MS MS, QTOF, IMAGING, TRIPLE QUADRUPOLE MS, MSe, UPC2, NANO UPLC), precision medicine

Teaching Summary

I lecture on the 2 x MSc courses at ICH in addition to various invited lectures both nationally and internally. Our group currently has 23 researchers including basic scientists and medics, post doctoral fellows, PhD students and research assistants.  Each year we take on BSc undergraduates in their 3rd year research projects.

The UCL Institute of Child Health is a post-graduate medical research department of UCL and subsequently our group contains a mixture of clinical and non-clinical academics involved in biochemical research.  Our group is a mixture of research fellows, clinicians and scientists carrying out research at both post-doctoral and PhD/MD level.  The research group also admits MSc, MRes and BSc undergraduates (average 2 MSc/MRes and 3-4 BSc students per year for the last 3 years).
