Research Summary

As a social anthropologist, my primary research interests are in material and popular culture in many forms, including food and fashion, and the cohort culture of the Babyboomers. I work between disciplines, combining anthropology, history and archaeology. I also work at the intersection of cuture and commerce, including marketing, brand and cultural strategy, and have acted as cultural consultant for international companies. I specialise in working in mainsteam cultures 'at home' in the UK and USA but also work in and on Asia, primarily Japan. Polynesia, especially Hawaii in anthropological and historical perspective, is another focus of my work. I am committed to public engagement and to popularising the work of the academy, I have written for national newspapers and magazines and appeared frequently as a media commentator on television and radio inclouding Women's Hour and the Great British Bake Off, and continue my public engagement through my ongoing book publishing.
