Research Summary

The primary themes in my research are related to equality of opportunity and factors which contribute to social inequalities in education. The research which formed the basis of my doctorate was situated in the field of social theory and education and in the area of parental aspiration and the transmission of advantage. My research interests extend across related themes of parental aspiration, school choice and the reproduction of social advantage. I am particularly interested in exploring the impact of gentrification on families in inner city neighbourhoods, and how locational habitus might be a structuring device, mediated through education, cultural practices and family socialisation.

Recent publications have been initiated through my involvement with international Enterprise projects. In 2020 I jointly conducted a literature review of the publications written in English in relation to Early Childhood Education in People's Republic of China for UCL Centre for Teacher and Early Years Education. Previously, in 2018, I was commissioned by a leading charity in Ghana to cooperatively review their fast-track teacher training programme.

Teaching Summary

Currently I contribute to the MA Early Years programme as a seminar leader on the Early Childhood Education and Contemporary Issues modules, and as a dissertation supervisor. Previously I was the module leader for the teaching and learning component of the B.Ed. (Hons) programme. Having also held the post of programme lead for the early year’s initial teacher training programme (EYITT), in the early stages of my career in higher education I worked on post-graduate initial teacher education programmes supporting education of primary and early years’ student teachers.

I also support the development of Enterprise projects, designing and delivering CPD training, consultancy and knowledge exchange programmes in global contexts. I have extensive experience of working on projects related to both teacher education and curriculum design, most recently working in developing early year’s leadership initiatives. I have previously worked as an academic advisor in Jordan and Myanmar for initial teacher education programmes and have led in-service initiatives for head teachers and teachers in China, Qatar and Pakistan.

My Enterprise work has also informed book chapters; for instance, Reflective Practice co-authored with Eleanor Kitto, published in The Early Years Foundation Stage (2021) edited by I. Palaiologou.
