  • Senior Lecturer
  • Dept of Civil, Environ &Geomatic Eng
  • Faculty of Engineering Science

I am a civil engineer with PhD in Environmental Engineering by Imperial College London and MSc in Water and Sanitation by the Sao Carlos School of Engineering of the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. I am specializing in water technologies for decentralized systems.

I have worked for 10 years in a state water company in Brazil where I gained practical experience on operation and maintenance of large urban water systems and optimization programmes of water treatment works of small communities.

I switched from industry to academia because I enjoy teaching and research. I have taught water and wastewater treatment for engineering degrees for 20 years both in Brazil and now in the UK where I am a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering of University College London.

My research focuses on development and evaluation of treatment technologies for water purification and interventions to reduce human exposure to pathogens and other hazards. I have particular expertise in design of modelling tools for simulation of water technologies.

Research Summary

My research is centred in three main areas:

- Design and evaluation of innovative water & wastewater/sanitation treatment technologies

- Adaption of sanitation/wastewater infrastructure to climate change

- Development of tools for sanitation systems risk assessment and decision making on wastewater/sanitation technology use/application

Some of my projects include the production of algal biomass from wastewater remediation, integration of hydroponics in buildings for plants growth from wastewater, reduction of risks associated with sanitation, the treatment and disinfection of rainwater, and the modelling the next generation of sanitation systems.

I have effective collaborative research within the academic community and industries at national and international levels. Some of my international collaborators are ICLEI-Africa, International Water Association - IWA, Korea Institute of Technology Construction – KICT, Green Solution, CLASS-A, and ifak Institut Automation und Kommunikation.  In addition, I have research collaborations with various university overseas, including Universidade Federal de Goias (Brazil),  Instituto Federal de Educacao, Ciencia e Tecnologia (Brazil), Universidade Federal de Vicosa (Brazil), Universidade Estadual Paulista (Brazil), Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa (Brazil), Escola de Engenharia de Sao Carlos, USP (Brazil), University of North Texas (USA), Chynhoi University of Technology (Zimbabwe), Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique),  Kyungnam University (South Korea), National University of Sciences & Technology – NUST  (Pakistan), and University Lahore (Pakistan).   At national level, some of my collaborators include Thames21, ARUP, ATKINS, Thames Water, Southern Water, and Engineers Without Borders.
