Biography

I am a civil engineer with PhD in Environmental Engineering by Imperial College London and MSc in Water and Sanitation by the Sao Carlos School of Engineering of the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. I am specializing in water technologies for decentralized systems.

I have worked for 10 years in a state water company in Brazil where I gained practical experience on operation and maintenance of large urban water systems and optimization programmes of water treatment works of small communities.

I switched from industry to academia because I enjoy teaching and research. I have taught water and wastewater treatment for engineering degrees for 25 years both in Brazil and now in the UK where I am a Professor of Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering of University College London.

My research focus on designing, implementation and evaluation of cost-effective water technologies and interventions to reduce environmental pollution and improve public health and wellbeing. I have also experience in modelling and simulation of slow sand filtration, and co-developed NewSan - a prototype to simulate nutrients and energy fluxes on the sanitation chain.

Research Summary

My research focuses on design and evaluation of cost-effective water/sanitation technologies and interventions to reduce environmental pollution and improve public health and wellbeing.

Research areas:

(1) Advancing developments in water treatment technologies

(2) Exploring interlinkages in the water nexus

(3) Promoting improvements in sanitation, hygiene and health

Research interests:

- Removal of micropollutants (e.g. microplastics/microfibers, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, PFOS/PFAS) from water

- Ecological processes e.g. s slow sand filtration, biosand filtration, ecological purification system, constructed wetlands, vertical hydroponics

- Photocatalysis and photolysis

- Adsorbents e.g. biochar, GAC/PAC

- Small scale microbial fuel cells for wastewater remediation

- Container-based sanitation

- Decentralised and closed-loop technologies

- Water reuse technologies and strategies

- Climate change adaptions

- Nature-based solutions

- Sanitation associated risks and diseases
