UCL Subsidiary Supervisor

I work at UCL teaching, researching and preparing for 'REF 2021', and I am an editor of the Built Environment journal.

I help others in publicly engaged planning research and practice, particularly via 'Territoire Europe' (Secretary General), and 'The UK 2070 Commission' (Steering Group Member).

Research Summary

My research centres on the relationship between the public and government. My publications explain 1) the value of lay knowledge to spatial planning, & 2) good practice in involving communities in 'major' decisions.

Since 2002, I have worked on (qualitative and quantitative) research projects, across public health, spatial planning, and regulatory processes. Recently completed studies include: an AHRC-funded project on the Governance of Urban Design (that led to the establishment of the Place Alliance); an ESRC-funded project on the role of the Publics in Evidence for 'Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects'; a UKRI-funded project on Public Engagement with Scientific Research on 'Grand Challenges'; and a BSP funded study of Civil Society Perspectives on Spatial Strategy in England.

Previously, I have worked as the Principal Researcher in the international department of the RTPI, the Global Planners Network, the Commonwealth Association of Planners, and in the National Center for Social Research working to the UK Government.

Teaching Summary

I teach across a broad scope of subject matter, including regeneration, housing, infrastructure, planning practice, and research methods.
