I work as a Lecturer in the UCL Clinical Operational Research Unit where I apply quantitative methods to support health protection policy and to improve performance of healthcare systems. I have a background in Industrial Engineering and Operational Research techniques gained during my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Sapienza University of Rome. In 2013, I earned my PhD in Genomics and Bioinformatics dealing with machine learning and dynamical modelling approaches to identify targets for cancer therapy.

My research work consists of supporting decision making through mathematical modelling, data analysis and development of user-friendly software. During my appointment in the UCL Clinical Operational Research Unit (CORU) I have been involved in several projects supporting process improvement within healthcare organisations or providing advice to the UK Department of Health on questions of national interest.
Currently, my work is funded by a project entitled "Workforce operations that realise knowledge-based transformational efficiency gains in community care" (WORKTECC). WORKTECC's aim is to identify scope for efficiency gain in home-based healthcare services, with particular focus on two North East London boroughs. My role in the project is to build mathematical and simulation models to support decision making regarding workforce composition as well as allocation, scheduling, routing and coordination of staff and volunteers.
Since August 2020, WORKTECC has been extended to study the impact and challenges of COVID-19 on home care services.
My previous experience at CORU includes the following projects:
- Informing national guidance on the stock of decontamination equipment to be held by healthcare services in England.
- Identifying the main causes of overcrowding in the emergency department of University College London NHS Foundation Trust.
- Demand analysis and capacity planning for stroke services in North Central London.
- Health economic analyses to compare different vaccine stockpiling strategies against possible influenza pandemics.
- Analysis of operational costs of school-based vaccination in the context of a national programme against influenza.
Since April 2016, I am also member of UCL Consultants.
I contribute to teaching Operational Research techniques as part of the MSc in Mathematical Modelling offered by the UCL Department of Mathematics.
