I graduated from Canterbury Christ Church college in 1998, with a first class joint honours BA (Ed) in Mathematics and Education. I was a primary teacher in Kent for 10 years, including subject lead for mathematics. I also took on roles as Leading Maths Teacher and Advanced Skills Teacher.
In 2003, I completed an MA in Mathematics Education at the Institute of Education, London.
I have been a member of ATM general council, member of the Royal Society’s Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME), panel member for the DCSF’s Williams’ review of Early Years and Primary Mathematics. I am a regular participant in BSRLM.
Since 2009, I have run my own independent primary mathematics consultancy, been part-time director for Primary at the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) until leaving in December 2014.
In 2016, I registered to pursue my doctoral studies, part-time. Supervisors are Prof Dame Celia Hoyles and Dr. Alison Clark-Wilson
My doctoral work used micro-teaching lesson study as a context for teachers constructing their understanding and application of promoting mathematical learning from procedural variation.
In February 2020, I joined UCL, Institute of Education, CPA department as a research fellow for an Education Endowment Foundation funded research, the Student Grouping Study, This project is now currently on hold until the pandemic enables us to resume our data collection as planned. This has enabled me to take unpaid leave for several months. So, I am now currently writing up my thesis, with a goal of completing a first draft in Dec 2021.
