Dr Leonie Tanczer

Dr Leonie Tanczer profile picture

Dr Leonie Maria Tanczer is a Lecturer in International Security and Emerging Technologies and has a research interest on the intersection of technology, security, and gender.

Prior to Dr Tanczer's lectureship appointment, she was Postdoctoral Research Associate for the EPSRC-funded PETRAS Internet of Things (IoT) Research Hub, where she was part of the "Standards, Governance and Policy" research stream.

Dr Tanczer holds a PhD from the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at Queen's University Belfast (QUB). Her thesis included supervision from both social sciences and engineering (ECIT) and focused on the (in)securitisation of hacking and hacktivism.

She is former Fellow at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) in Berlin. She studied Political Science (B.A.) at the University of Vienna and University of Limerick (Republic of Ireland) and Political Psychology (MSc.) at Queen's University Belfast.

Research Summary

Dr Tanczer is researching, teaching, and publishing on a wide array of Internet-related topics ranging from online sexism to censorship and surveillance. More information about her ongoing work and publications can be found on her personal website.

Teaching Summary

Dr Tanczer teaches on the UCL STEaPP's Master's of Public Administration (MPA) programme. She leads the "Digital Technologies and Policy" module as well as the "Gender and Technology" and "Science Advice for Policy" electives.
