Biography

I am a social scientist with a background in architecture, urban design and planning. My doctoral research (at Sheffield School of Architecture, University of Sheffield) focused on marginalized migrant communities in Sheffield, and examined the significance of socio-spatial dimension for inclusive urban planning and design. My research won the International Best PhD Award 2015 from Society for Research on Identity Formation, US. Post-PhD, my research largely examines and explores socio-spatial relations and practices in the Global South for developing sustainable urban planning and design. I have cross cutting expertise in Inclusive and Resilient city design, Health and Wellbeing and, Critical Social and Digital Media. My past and current research advances theoretical and empirical work on how socio-spatial practices in city-making creates exclusionary landscapes of sustainable development in the Global South. With keen interesting interdisciplinary and international research particularly focusing on developing countries context, I consistently strive for opportunities that allow me to expand my research interests in interdisciplinary urban studies and to explore approaches within the social sciences, humanities and arts, and engineering which offer new ways of understanding and studying people and environment interactions. This has allowed me to develop a wealth of research methods and interdisciplinary approaches for examining complex and pressing challenges affecting cities and city regions today.

Research Summary

My research interests’ deal with urban and cultural studies, critical social and digital media, spatial representation and practice, identity negotiations, cultural encounters in contemporary cities. I am also interested in an interdisciplinary understanding of social, spatial, temporal and material practices in cities and a comparative study of these practices in Global North and South.

I am currently the Co-chair for the UCL's Environment Research domain and have been invited to be on the UCL Advisory Group on Climate Change and Health. At BSA , I am one of the co-directors for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).

Teaching Summary
