Prof Laura Vaughan

Laura Vaughan completed a Bachelor of Design at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem in 1989. From 1988 onwards she worked at Shlomo Aronson Landscape Architects, Town Planners and Architects and then for Yoram Fogel Architects. She also worked as an illustrator for the David Kroyanker series of books on the architecture of Jerusalem. Laura returned to London in 1992 and her Master of Science degree in Advanced Architectural Studies was completed in 1994 at the Bartlett, UCL. In parallel to her EPSRC funded PhD in Architecture, completed 1999, she worked as a Research Associate and Company Secretary at Space Syntax Limited (a UCL knowledge transfer spin out). Laura joined UCL’s Space research group in 2001. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2007 and to Professor of Urban Form and Society in 2011. Professor Vaughan was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 2005. She was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2015. In addition to her extensive research and teaching activities, Laura is regularly invited to disseminate knowledge to industry, policy-makers and the general public. She has worked with Museum of London on an exhibition on London's East End and has contributed to several programmes on BBC radio and television.

Research Summary

Dr Laura Vaughan is Professor of Urban Form and Society and the Director of the Space Syntax Laboratory at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. Since 2004 she has led a series of interdisciplinary projects, collaborating with experts in history, geography, crime science, public health, anthropology, transport, and planning to investigate the spatial patterning of poverty, segregation, and economic and social exchange. Her recent publications include an edited collection, Suburban Urbanities (UCL Press, 2015), which considered the evolution of London’s suburban high streets since the nineteenth century. Professor Vaughan's latest book, Mapping Society, is due out in 2018. She blogs at: http://urbanformation.wordpress.com/.

Teaching Summary

Laura Vaughan teaches on the MSc/MRes Space Syntax: Architecture and Cities at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. She was Director of the MSc Advanced Architectural Studies from 2001-2009. She has been a visiting lecturer at a number of universities in the UK, as well as in the Netherlands, Sweden and Israel. Laura  runs the Spatial Justice module, which examines the interface between urban form and social outcomes. To explore these issues, the module presents research into the relationship between urban design and crime, poverty, health, environmental justice and other issues of urban and "disurban" space. She also has an interest in teaching innovation, for which she has published several pieces on the subject.
