  • Professor of Functional Neurosurgery
  • Clinical and Movement Neurosciences
  • UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology
  • Faculty of Brain Sciences

Prof Zrinzo completed undergraduate medical studies in Malta (MD - 1995), before moving to London to pursue a career in Neurosurgery. He was awarded an MSc in Clinical Neuroscience with Distinction from the UCL Institute of Neurology, London, before embarking on Neurosurgical training in London (Atkinson Morley Hospital, Royal London Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and Oldchurch Hospital).

Elected Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Neurosurgery) in 2005, he also engaged in two Fellowships in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery during neurosurgical training: at the UCL Institute of Neurology, Queen Square and at UCLA, USA.

Appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon, National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in 2007 and Head of the Functional Neurosurgery Unit in 2018, current interests include the surgical management of chronic neurological and psychiatric disease including advanced Parkinson's disease, dystonia, tremor, chronic pain, headache (trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia), Tourette syndrome, treatment refractory depression and OCD.

Research has been directed towards continued improvement in the surgical care of patients undergoing deep brain stimulation or other stereotactic procedures with particular emphasis on improving safety, accuracy and efficacy of surgery. He also has a special interest in cranial nerve surgery. Author of over 175 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and several book chapter, his work has received several international awards.
