Dr Bloomfield is a UCL Excellence Principal Clinical Research Fellow. He leads the Translational Psychiatry Research Group. He is an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at both the Traumatic Stress Clinic based in St Pancras Hospital in London and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He studied Natural Sciences (Physiological Sciences) specialising in neuroscience, pharmacology and psychology, at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He then studied Clinical Medicine at Oxford. He completed his medical Foundation training internships in London and the Channel Islands, where he worked as an air ambulance doctor. He began his clinical Psychiatry training on the Charing Cross rotation, where he worked at Charing Cross and Chelsea & Westminster Hospitals. He was then appointed a Medical Research Council Clinical Research Fellow at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre Psychiatric Imaging Group under Prof Oliver Howes based at the Imperial College London Institute of Clinical Sciences in Hammersmith Hospital. His PhD thesis was on dopaminergic mehanisms underlying psychosis. During his research fellowship he worked in Prof Howes' clinic for treatment-resistant psychosis at the Maudsley Hospital and in psychotherapy at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. Upon completion of Dr Bloomfield's research fellowship he was appointed to an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in Psychiatry at UCL where he worked clinically in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at University College Hospital. He has worked clinically in a range of specialist settings including acute in-patient psychiatry; a community recovery and rehabilitation team for people with psychosis; the Camden Crisis Resolution Team for people experiencing an acute mental health crisis and needing intensive home treatment under Professor David Osborn; and the Assertive Outreach Team, a community team for people experiencing severe mental illnesses and other mental health problems including substance dependence and personality disorder. Dr Bloomfield is currently undertaking advanced training in cognitive psychotherapy with the University of Oxford. He is an Approved Clinician under section 12 of the Mental Health Act.
Dr Bloomfield's work seeks to understand the mechanisms underlying how exposure to risk factors for mental illness during childhood and adolescence alter adult brain and cognitive function to give rise to mental illnesses so that new treatment and preventative interventions can be developed. He has been awarded an Excellence Fellowship from University College London, the British Medical Association's Margaret Temple Award for schizophrenia research, the British Association of Psychopharmaocology's BAP Award for Junior Clinical Psychopharmacologist of the Year and the Royal College of Psychiatrists Trainee of the Year award. In addition he has received young investigator awards from the European College of Neuropsychopharmocology, the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and major international research societies.

He teaches Masters students in Mental Health Sciences. He supervises PhD, DClinPsy and Masters students in Mental Health Science, Cognitive Neuroscience, Neuroscience, Clinical Neuroscience and Natural Science.
